WATERCOLORS BY CHANNING HOLLAND

Salmonier - Newfoundland
Watercolor, 22" x 30"

Painted on 300 lb cold press by Arches, this painting was painted without brushwork. The light areas were masked out, and the darks were poured in. Using water and salt, a wonderful misty feeling was created. The painting progressed with more pouring. This painting was inspired by a fairly wild area where Channing spent happy days as a child.

Channing Holland writes: "I have been painting since I was in my teens. Growing up in Newfoundland, there weren't a lot of opportunities to see or study art but I was fortunate to find a couple of teachers who had studied on 'the mainland' as we call it, and I took lessons every Saturday morning for about five years. I live in Toronto now and am a graduate of the Ontario College of Art ('93). I work part-time in the Air Force Reserve and paint as much as I can the rest of the time.

My work is mostly in watercolour, although I also do acrylic, gouache and some egg tempera, often combining them in mixed media paintings. At the moment I am struggling with watercolour mono-prints. I paint nature scenes (close-up rather than large vistas), florals, old Victorian homes and anything else that presents itself. I just plain love to paint!!"

"Front Doors & Back Lanes Series #2, Newfoundland", watercolor, 15" x 22".

This painting was painted on Strathmore 300 gm hot pressed paper. Channing is fascinated with entrances, doorways, gates, etc. This paper was difficult to work with, but she liked the effects it gave, and would definitely try it again.

This is "Peony Power", watercolor, 28" x 42".

Channing loves painting large watercolors, this one is on 300 gm Arches cold pressed paper.

"Bonavista Bay - Newfoundland", watercolor, 18" x 24".

This is a mixed media painting, with watercolor , gouache, acrylic and collage.

"I have sold paintings through galleries, auctions and commissions but have not yet had the experience of a show. Someday I hope toa studio and teach art in a manner which combines solid art training with creativity and enthusiasm".
