KPT 3

What to do with it, lesson 1

The Texture Explorer

For this little tips section, I was operating out of Paint Shop Pro 4.14.
You can find out more about this product at Metatools.  There might be a trial version there somewhere.

Figure 1.

Here's the interface for the Texture Explorer, one of my favorites. The first black area you see on the left with a little white line is where you can change the direction of the pattern.  Just click and drag it around in a circle until you have something you like.

The second one is for opacity.  You position your cursor over  that and drag to the right or the left, you will see percentages appear in the bottom, light gray area on the left.  Right gives you more and left gives you less.  So it is possible just to have a tint or it can appear in its strongest form.

Third is what they term the "glue".  There are 10 different ways there to use these textures, all the way from normal to way out.  You can click on that and see all of them one at the time, or you can hold down your mouse button and see a list, and click on the one you want.

If you look closely, you will see at the bottom of the interface above, on the left side, and about in the center of the picture,  a tiny little light gray arrow.  If you don't see what you want you can click on that little arrow, and you will see a wonderland of them. (See Figure 2.) All you have to do is double click on one, and you will see it appear in the middle on the other screen, like the one in Figure 1.  To see more, you just move your cursor over them upwards and to the outside of them, and many more will race by!  Change the direction of the way they are appearing by moving your cursor down and a little way out of the grouping.  There are so many!  AND you can add your own personal favorites that you make to the selection.

I love this one!  Its perfect for dresses and wings on fairies.  As you can see, I picked this one from the selection above.

Suppose I want to see other mutations of this one.  See those red balls?  Starting at the bottom, you can click or roll your mouse over the red buttons to see - going around the main one - mutations of it.  Each red ball increases the degree of mutation.  If you find one you like, you can click on it and it will then appear in the center.  You can save it too, by clicking on the plus sign inside a circle, at the bottom of the interface on the right.  Give it a name, and its yours forever!  The one ball with several colors will mutate colors only, roll your mouse over that to see that happen.  The bar shows you the gradient and the strength of the colors visually.  As for the words across the bottom, you can click and drag either to the left or the right to use each of those.

Finally, here's a screen shot of all the pictures I made, and when I clicked on OK, it filled my empty graphic!

Figure 4

Now I will show you what I did next.  I wrote some text in the box, then I filled the (fat) font with another one of those textures, called gold levels.  I made it myself. Then, using Eye Candy 3.1, I gave it an inner bevel, at a very low setting. Then a drop shadow, and this is what you get using KPT 3 Texture Explorer!
